Adrian Lucas – Choral Conductor

With over 30 years in the professional world, Adrian Lucas has a wealth of experience and is in great demand as a choral and orchestral conductor. He was an Organ Scholar at St John’s College, Cambridge under Dr George Guest and studied conducting at the Royal Academy with Colin Metters.

Adrian was director of music at Worcester Cathedral and Artistic Director of the Worcester Three Choirs Festival for 15 years, and has worked with major international ensembles such as the Philharmonia Orchestra, CBSO, RLPO, Florilegium and the Academy of Ancient Music. He has directed or chorus-mastered for almost all the major choral works from Monteverdi to James Macmillan and continues to develop and foster music-making for children and young adults. He has made regular appearances on radio and television and has directed and played on a wide range of CD recordings.

In 2002, he became musical director of the City of Birmingham Choir and has taken this group forward through their 90th anniversary with a series of commissions, collaborative ventures and cross-cultural events to retain their position as one of the foremost choral groups in England’s second city. As well as tackling major works with orchestra such as Janacek’s Glagolitic Mass, Rachmaninov’s The Bells, and James Macmillan’s Seven Last Words from the Cross, he has directed them in challenging small-scale works such as Byrd’s Laudibus in Sanctis, the evocative Requiem by Herbert Howells and Vaughan Williams’ Mass in G minor. Commissions with the choir have included Koinonia by Chris Long – a piece written for the Cultural Olympiad in 2012 and bringing together choirs and percussion groups from across the diversity of Birmingham’s population.

In 2015, Adrian was appointed to the new post of Head of Choral Studies at the Royal School of Church Music. Here, he has overall responsibility for the immense breadth of choral events organised by the RSCM, as well as establishing a range of events to train choral directors over the coming years.

Alongside his conducting, Adrian continues to perform as an organist, adjudicator and lecturer, and has established his own recording company, Acclaim Productions Ltd. He is also currently the chairman of the British Music Society, conductor of the National Preparatory Schools Orchestra and musical director of the Millennium Youth Choir.
